Sympathetic Cooling of Mixed Species Two-Ion Crystals for Precision
Spectroscopy
   [PDF]

In sympathetic Doppler cooling the cooled and cooling ions typically have
different masses. We investigate the effect of the mass ratio on the achievable
temperature limit in the presence of external heating. We show that for an
aluminium quantum logic clock cooling with Ca+ ions gives a comparable cooling
limit as cooling with Mg+ or Be+ ions for typical trap heating rates.
Furthermore we present simulation results of the rethermalisation dynamics
after a background gas collision for the Al+/Ca+ crystal.
