We generate nonclassical conditional states by exploiting the quantum correlations of multimode twin-beam states obtained in the mesoscopic photon-number regime. A strong relation between the sub-shot-noise correlations in twin beams and sub-Poissonian character of the conditional states is experimentally revealed and it determines suitable conditions for sub-Poissonian light generation.
