The methods to compute the spectrum of the quantum Rabi model based on continued fractions are reviewed. They fall into two classes. The first class implements the spectral condition following from a representation in the infinite-dimensional Bargmann space of analytic functions. The second class works with finite-dimensional spaces and invokes a certain limit to obtain the spectrum of the full model. I show that the latter procedure is ambiguous and can be justified only through recourse to the analyticity argument from the first approach.
