Conjugates, Correlation and Quantum Mechanics    [PDF]

Alexander Wilce
This note presents an easy derivation of the Jordan structure of finite-dimensional quantum theory from a few simply stated postulates. The key idea is to associate to each physical system an isomorphic "conjugate" system, and a bipartite state \eta perfectly and uniformly correlating every basic measurement on A with its counterpart on this conjugate system. For the quantum-mechanical system associated with a complex Hilbert space, the conjugate system corresponds to the conjugate Hilbert space, and \eta, to the maximally entangled state.
