We investigate both theoretically and experimentally the effect of real-life imperfections on the fidelity of qubit rotations in the presence of thermal motion. Specifically we develop a model predicting the coherence time of Rabi oscillations in the presence of an inhomogeneous driving field or Ramsey oscillations in the presence of an inhomogeneous state-selective potential. We demonstrate the theoretical dependence by an experiment observing the coherence time in a volume much smaller than the entire sample.
