We study quantum metrology, or parameter estimation with quantum systems, for general pure states and show that abstention, i.e. the possibility of giving an inconclusive answer in the estimation protocol, can drastically improve the accuracy of the estimation. We focus on phase estimation and quantify the required amount of abstention for a given accuracy. We also develop novel analytical tools to obtain the asymptotic behavior for arbitrary states.
