Optimal design and quantum benchmarks for coherent state amplifiers    [PDF]

We establish the ultimate quantum limits to the amplification of an unknown coherent state in the realistic setting where the expected photon number is finite. To validate the experimental demonstration of genuine quantum amplifiers, we provide the benchmark that must be surpassed in order to beat any classical amplification strategy. Our results guarantee that a successful demonstration is possible for every finite value of the expected photon number.
