We identify optimal quantum error correction codes for situations that do not admit perfect correction. We use entanglement decay as a signature of the correctability of errors, and as specific realisations we consider noisy channels with correlated errors on multiple qubits. We present n-qubit inequalities that govern the regimes in which different repetition codes are optimal and demonstrate significant improvement in performance.
