This paper introduces a new type of intercept correction factor for use with the tangent method of analyzing Fowler-Nordheim (FN) plots. This is part of a re-examination of FN-plot analysis procedures. The new factor is more cleanly defined and more useful than the factor previously used. Practical use is currently restricted to those classes of emission situation for which the associated slope correction factor can be reliably predicted. For orthodox emission, where it is assumed that the circuit current is controlled by the emitter characteristics and that tunnelling takes place through a Schottky-Nordheim (SN) barrier, the theory applies to any type of FN plot; further, good working formulae make numerical evaluation of the slope correction factor and the new intercept correction factor straightforward. A numerical illustration is given of how this new factor can be used to derive information about the pre-exponential in a FN-type equation relating to the SN barrier. Using simulated emission data, it is demonstrated that the procedure is self-consistent in that it extracts, with reasonable accuracy, the simulation input parameters.
